DIY Paranormal Investigation Projects

On this page, I will link to all of the DIY paranormal investigation tools I’ve built to help my wife on her ghost hunting adventures. While I may be a healthy skeptic when it comes to the paranormal, my wife has a much more open mind on the subject. My logical science loving mind may be very skeptical by nature, but that doesn’t mean I don’t find the subject interesting or entertaining, with one of my favorite paranormal shows being the classic TAPS “Ghost Hunters” series, where my wife prefers the long running and very popular “Ghost Adventures”.

Once I decided to rekindle my old electronics hobby, one of the first things I wanted to tackle was building my wife some of the tools seen being used on these shows, from EMF Meters and REMPODS, to Spirit Boxes and motion detectors. I knew I had the knowledge to make these tools, so why not indulge in the hobby I enjoy and make my wife some cool ghost hunting gear!

The problem with the paranormal, and those trying to prove its existence, is none of it stands up very well to the “Scientific Method”, even though many modern investigative groups have made great strides in trying to do just that. To that end, they have employed many tools that are basically common devices repurposed based on observational assumptions of how ghosts or the paranormal in general operate.

The primary goals of many of these tools are to detect the presence of something paranormal, and perhaps allow it to communicate. Some common assumptions in the paranormal world are that spirits have the ability to manifest and manipulate electromagnetic fields, manipulate atmospheric conditions in an area to “draw power” they can use for manifestations such as light, dense darkness, and even appear to be solid. Some believe these phenomena can be seen in different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum alongside the visible. Also, we can’t forget about the EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, where voices that are not audible to the human ear are picked up by electronic recording devices.

I have my doubts about many of these detection methods for reasons I will discuss on each individual project page, but many investigators employ a wide range of tools to try and collaborate evidence they detect with those tools, and what they experience in person. The methodology makes perfect sense, but the results are often left up to individual interpretation and subject to bias. If you’re looking for ghosts in place that’s thought to be haunted, and you believe in the idea of ghosts, then what you detect or experience is more likely to be labeled as paranormal, even if it’s not.

Still, I think it’s cool, and I commend those doing the best they can to prove the existence of the paranormal with the tools available to them. Coming up with new and better ways to try and make their case in a field mainstream science almost always ignores for fear of ridicule. Since I’m just some geeky guy who wants to help out his wife, I don’t care what people think about the paranormal, I get to make some cool gadgets and make my wife happy! That’s a win in my book any day!
